Day 1 - U.S.A. - Santiago de Cuba (D)
Morning flight to Santiago de Cuba, on the island's East end. On arrival you will be met and taken to hotel for check-in. Plans for the week will be reviewed with your local hosts.
Day 2 - Santiago de Cuba (B/D)
Visit to a local high school for a lecture or Spanish language lesson. Afternoon free. In the evening, informal Cuban "Salsa" dance lessons.
Day 3 - Santiago de Cuba (B/D)
Visit San Juan Hill, where Teddy Roosevelt made his famous "Attack up San Juan Hill" and the Moncada Army Barracks that Fidel Castro stormed on July 26, 1953. Although defeated, this marked the start of the Cuban Revolution and served as a harbinger for things to come. Visit the Granjita Siboney, the farmhouse where Castro planned these attacks and now a museum. In the afternoon, visit the Old Colonial section of Santiago once considered the gateway to the conquest of Latin America. See the fortifications built in the 17th century to guard the city from attack by pirates and tour the Pirate Museum. In the evening enjoy song, music and dance showcasing the rich heritage of Africa in Cuba.
Day 4 - Santiago de Cuba - Santo Domingo (B/D)
Morning free to enjoy the beach. In the afternoon travel to the Sierra Maestra mountains. Here you will hike and visit a field hospital that was used during the Cuban Revolution and that served as headquarters for Fidel Castro, Ché, Raul and other Revolutionary fighters. Overnight at a mountain inn near Santo Domingo.
Day 5 - Sierra Maestra - Santiago de Cuba (B/D)
Spend the morning hiking to the various villages. Enroute to Santiago, visit a cigar or rum factory.
Day 6 - Santiago de Cuba (B/D)
Take the opportunity to visit the open air market and local shops. In the afternoon travel east into the mountains and ascend towards Gran Piedra. This is a granite outcropping rising to a height of 1200 meters, from which on a clear day you can see Haiti and Jamaica. Learn about plantation life and the cultivation and harvesting of coffee at the Isabelica Coffee Plantation.
Day 7 - Santiago de Cuba (B/D)
Day left free for personal exploration.
Day 8 - Santiago de Cuba - U.S.A. (B)
ADIOS. Transfer to the airport for flight home.
