Costa Rica Adventure
Day 1 - U.S.A. - Costa Rica (D)
Early morning flight to San José, Costa Rica. Upon arrival midday, travel to the famous topiary gardens of Zarcelo on the way to Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica's most active volcano. Hike to an amazing waterfall and swim in the pools at its base. Tonight bathe in the hot springs with a view of the lava spewing volcano.
Day 2 - Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí - Puerto Viejo de Limon (B/L/D)
Travel to Sarapiquí region and explore the rain forest with guides who will lead you through the trails of La Selva Biological Research Station. Catch a glimpse of some of the 400 species of birds that have been identified within the Reserve. The trails are a wonderful introduction to the rainforest. After touring the facilities, travel to the Caribbean coast past banana plantations, palm trees and azure waters through the port city of Limon.
Day 3 - Puerto Viejo de Limon (B/L/D)
One of the highlights of the tour is meeting the indigenous inhabitants of Costa Rica, the Bri-Bri. After an exhilarating two-hour hike through primary and secondary rainforest, arrive at the heart of their village. See how they make everything from crafts to chocolate.
Spend the afternoon kayaking at Punta Uva, one of the most beautiful sights in all of Costa Rica where the rainforest practically pours into the sea.
Day 4 - Punta Mona (camping) (B/L/D)
Hike through the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge to your campsite at Punta Mona (Monkey's Point). These days are an exercise in sustainable living as little food is brought along. Spend the days snorkeling, fishing and gathering local fruits and vegetables for the nights' feasts. Everything that is eaten must be caught from the sea or foraged from the gardens.
Day 5 - Punta Mona (camping) (B/L/D)
An early morning boat excursion takes you to view the dolphins playing off-shore. Then spend the day exploring the mangroves of the Gandoca Lagoon by kayak or working in the organic gardens. The night is spent walking on the beach in total darkness in the hope of witnessing the nesting rituals of the giant Green and Leatherback turtles, some of which weigh over one thousand pounds.
Day 6 - Cahuita - Turrialba (B/L/D)
Return to town by boat and head for Cahuita National Park. Snorkel at beautiful coral reefs and in addition to viewing the beauty of this underwater ecosystem, witness the damage that the runoff from nearby banana plantations has had on the marine community. From there we leave the Caribbean for the mountain town of Turrialba. A visit to the serpentarium affords us the rare opportunity to witness the venom being extracted from the deadly fer-de-lance snake by the country's foremost snake expert.
Day 7 - San José (B/L/D)
Travel to San José to visit the National Museum that houses artifacts dating back to 10,000 BC. Visit a local market for souvenirs. Optional: wake up early and head to the banks of the Pacuare River for an unforgettable day of white water rafting. Then travel into San José. Farewell dinner.
